【Half-day Tour】Seiwa Bunraku viewing

in preparation..

Seiwa Bunraku(清和文楽) is the only Bunraku theater in Kyushu. Bunraku is one of the traditional performing arts in Japan and it is also known as Ningyo Joruri. There is Bunraku museum by the theater and they have good collections of puppets and costumes for them.

In the mid-19th century, one troupe from Awaji island (Hyogo Prefecture) once visited Yamato Town (previously called Seiwa) . One local farmer, who was a big fan of Ningyo Joruri drama, asked them to sell a puppet to him. He also requested them to teach him how to use it. Since then, Ningyo Joruri has been developed by farmers and they named their Ningyo Joruri “Seiwa Bunraku”.

After enjoying a play, we will visit Seiwa Bunraku museum which stands just next to the theater. It has many costumes and goods for plays. There is also Michi no Eki (roadside station) where you can get local speciality.
