Highlights

⭐️Koganotaki Fall (古閑の滝)〜Local guide’s winter recommendations!!〜

Koganotaki Fall is a symbol of winter in Aso. It consists of two waterfalls: Otoko Falls, with a drop of approximately 80 meters, and Onna Falls, with a drop of approximately 100 meters. In the coldest season, the cold wind blowing from the Aso Valley creates a powerful icefall. The delicate and beautiful “ice flowers” that form when splashes of water freeze are works of art created by ice. You will be captivated by the mystical sight that unfolds before your eyes. Also, in early spring, the sound of ice cracking and falling echoes through the air, a sound that heralds the arrival of spring in Aso. Every Saturday from mid-January to the end of February, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Koganotaki Fall is lit up, offering a fantastic view of the falls that is different from that of the daytime. In this tour, our fun and friendly English-speaking guide will take you to Koganotaki Fall and share geological and local stories with you!

Note : Please understand that there is no guarantee that you will be able to see Koganotaki Fall frozen, as it depends on the weather.

⭐️Kamishikimi kumanoimasu Shrine (上色見熊野座神社)

100 moss-covered stone lanterns, long-lasting stone steps and deep-in-forest atmosphere create the mystic and divine atmosphere and it has captured people’s heart. Some people describe that it is like being in an another world. It is also acknowledged as a place which was depicted in one animation film illustrated by a manga artist from Kumamoto. Now, fans of the film visit Kamishikimi Kumanoimasu Shrine for Anime Pilgrimage or Anime Seichi Junrei in Japanese.

⭐️Shirakawa Spring(白川水源)

Shirakawa spring is located in Minamiaso village which is famous for having a lot of springs. At Shirakawa spring, water gushes out at 60 tons per minute and it is the source of Shirakawa river and flows to Kumamoto City. You can taste spring water so bring an empty bottle with you!

⭐️Mt. Nakadake crater(中岳火口)

Nakadake Crater is a must-visit place in Aso and one of the few places in the world where you can see an active crater. You will feel the breath of the earth. At Sunasenri area, you will see desolate volcanic landscape. It is an old crater and almost no vegetation grows here. It is a world of sand as far as the eye can see.
